How to read squeaks, chirps, and popcorns—and build lasting trust with your piggies.

💬 Understanding Guinea Pig Language
-
Wheeking: Excited vocalization, often for food or attention
-
Purring: Can signal contentment—or irritation if it’s a low rumble
-
Teeth Chattering: A warning—back off!
-
Chirping: Rare and mysterious—no one knows why, but it often happens during quiet, calm moments
🐾 Signs of Bonding
-
Relaxing near you without hiding
-
Taking treats gently from your hand
-
“Popcorning” (joy jumps!) in your presence
-
Licking your fingers or grooming your clothes

How to Build Trust
-
Speak softly and move slowly
-
Offer treats from your hand, gradually decreasing the distance
-
Let them come to you—never force handling
-
Spend quiet time near their cage each day
👑 Dominance & Piggy Politics
Guinea pigs establish a hierarchy, even among bonded pairs. It's normal to
see rumble-strutting, mounting, and nose-offs. But watch for:
-
Excessive biting or injuries
-
One pig is blocking food, water, or hiding spots
-
Persistent bullying or isolation

⏳ Rebonding tip: If you must separate pigs due to a fight, give them a break and reintroduce them in neutral territory with clean hides and toys. If blood is drawn, a permanent separation may be necessary.
