Your guinea pig’s cage isn’t just a home—it’s their entire world. A thoughtfully designed habitat can make the difference between a bored piggy and one who wheeks, zooms, and thrives.
Whether you’re setting up your first enclosure or upgrading to something roomier, here’s how to create a cozy, clean, and enriching space your guinea pigs will love.

Size Matters
Guinea pigs need more space than most people think. The bare minimum for two pigs is 7.5 square feet (like a 2x3 C&C cage), but 10.5+ square feet is far better. That’s about a 2x4 C&C cage—and trust us, your pigs will thank you.
Bigger space = more exercise, more enrichment, and more happiness.

Safe Flooring Only
Wire bottoms are a no-go. They can hurt your guinea pig’s feet and cause a painful condition called bumblefoot.
✅ Choose:
Coroplast flooring (like in C&C cages)
Fleece with absorbent layers underneath
Paper or aspen bedding over solid plastic bases
Avoid cedar or non-kiln-dried pine—they can be harmful to your pig’s respiratory system.

Cozy, Comfy Bedding
Guinea pigs spend a lot of time on their feet, so comfort is key. Your options:
Fleece liners: soft, reusable, and great with daily spot-cleaning
Paper bedding: disposable, low-dust, and comfy
Aspen shavings: safe if you prefer wood-based bedding
Spot clean daily and do a full cage refresh at least once a week.

Hide and Seek
Piggies are prey animals. They need cozy hideouts to feel safe and secure.
Give each pig their own hidey so they don’t compete for space.
Ideas:
Wooden huts
Plastic igloos
Fleece forests
Tunnel tubes

Good Airflow
Avoid glass aquariums or sealed bins. Poor airflow can lead to respiratory issues and overheating.
❌ Skip:
Tanks
Plastic tubs
✅ Do:
Use open-top or mesh-top enclosures
Keep cages away from drafts, direct sun, and noisy spaces

Fun Layouts Prevent Boredom
Enrichment is essential to prevent stress and depression. Make your piggy’s habitat interesting:
Add ramps (gentle slope and secure)
Use foraging toys and treat puzzles
Rearrange hideouts weekly
Rotate toys for novelty
A happy pig is a curious, zooming pig.

Food and Water Access
Your piggies should always have access to:
Fresh hay (unlimited!)
Pellets (in a sturdy ceramic bowl)
Fresh veggies (served daily)
Clean water (in a bottle or bowl—check and refill daily)
Pro tip: ceramic bowls stay in place better than plastic ones.

Keep It Clean
A clean home means healthy pigs.
🧹 Do this:
Spot clean poop and soiled bedding daily
Do a full clean weekly (replace all bedding and wipe down surfaces)
Wash fleece liners with pig-safe detergent
A clean cage also reduces odor—and makes snuggle time much more pleasant.
